It used to be going southbound that I was awed by the beauty of the city at night. Just before I descended into the South Station tunnel, it was all around me, brilliant lights, glowing clocks, close enough to almost reach out and touch. And then just as I was starting to wonder why I didn't hit the buildings, all of a sudden I was in the tunnel and it was gone.

When they finished the artery tunnels I missed that view. Now, driving south, the Zakim bridge glows distractingly all the way up to the new tunnel, and the city seems rather distant and not very bright. (Not that I have anything against pretty bridges, mind you.) But yesterday I was travelling to Woburn somewhat later than usual, and it was dark by the time I reached the entrance to the northbound tunnel. There it was! The bright buildings right in front of me, the truck whizzing as though we could fly right into their arms. Boston, Boston! It made me want to sing.
